How to write a summary

As you will see from the links below, there is more than one way of writing a summary. However, there are some basic features which are generally agreed upon. These are:

  • A summary is much shorter than the original text - guidelines vary from 10% to 50%, depending on the length, style and content of the original
  • It should be written in your own words
  • It includes the main points of a text, but not details, quotations or examples
  • It should faithfully reflect the meaning of the original

The links below provide guidelines, advice and examples on writing a summary.
